Mutants have existed all throughout recorded history, though in recent
years there have been more than ever before. At least, that
was the
case.
Less than a month ago, however, tragedy struck. Not on a local scale, not on
a national scale, but on a global scale. Nobody is sure quite how or why it
happened, but that doesn't change the fact that there was a mass decimation
of powered mutants. Many who lost their powers are left displaced, confused,
and caught in limbo between being a mutant and being truly human.
The surviving mutants were rounded up from every corner of the globe, and
thrown together in a secure location where they can be 'adequately monitored'.
Translation: where they can be kept under control. Few of them are happy
about this, but there is little that can be done with Sentinels (a brand new
invention unveiled by the government) and hired goons surrounding the grounds
of what was once the Xavier Institute. Still, given enough time and scheming
anything is possible.
There are some humans, on the other hand, that see this as a gift from the
gods. Mutants have been largely depowered, rendering them little more than
normal people. This was how the Facility came to be - an organization that runs
experiments and tests on both powered and depowered mutants alike. All in
the name of science, right? That and in the name of finding a way to permanently
exterminate the X-gene.
As for those who've lost their powers? They'll just have to come to terms with
the fact that they're
not so special anymore.
